It looks like there is a diode in there, but (other shoe dropping) 1 V is
more than I would have predicted for drop across a diode that has small
current.
I would have expected something more like 0.65V drop, which would be 3.95V
on pin 8.

Another possibility is that there is a resistor (or similar none protective
circuit) in series with the battery.

So if it's a diode the reverse battery shouldn't damage.
If it's a resistor then damage could occur.

I guess I'm just gonna have to take my Plus apart and find out.
