Thanks to all for your advice. As was pointed out, as this is strictly for fun, I'll just pull the battery out (lest it leak at some future point), proceed with the cleaning, and leave it at that.
As far as the source of the corrosion patch, other evidence would tend to confirm the "minor flooding" theory. There is corrosion on the SCSI and printer connectors, and a stain in the bottom RF shield under the patch that would indicate a bit of water (or something) pooled there.
