So I wonder what your position is on CPU accelerators and other add-on's? What is the point of a PDS slot?

These items where produced to enhance the performance of the basic machine. Don't they also have a place in history? Don't add that ethernet card? Don't add more ram?

John,

sorry if I didn't make myself clear enough. (Those who bore long enough with me on this list know how I spread the news about the SE/475 and Norman Jagnow's SE/40, so they may know about my interest in hacks.) I absolutely advocate and encourage any approach anybody may think of to improve performance and usability of the machines covered by this list, and I have done my share of upgrading compacts myself. I have this 128 MB, 2 GB SE/30 sitting right here, and when it does not drive a 17" monitor in millions of colours, it is because it is ethernetted and I am too poor to afford a PDS duplicator. I have the 575 mobo waiting to make its way into the Colour Classic which is "all slots filled", too, and so on. I'll build my own SE/475 as soon as I find the suitable monitor. All these are fun upgrades; I have difficulties today to follow someone who says he has to upgrade an SE to the utmost because it is his only computer; we are in 2005. But the point I wanted to make is, don't upgrade everything that gets into reach just because you can, especially if the change is permanent. Accelerators, add-ons of any kind, RAM and HD upgrades are all in order, but I have fun in keeping a couple machines the way they were "way back when" to keep the feeling alive what computing was like before the upgrades. What about the "Gee, there's a Lithium battery soldered in there - what a STRANGE idea!" effect? What about seeing the incredible power of applications like CricketGraph or even MacWrite in a 1MB/20MB environment, with a 400-something kB System Folder?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers, OM
