At the risk of putting words in other's mouths, I think his position is
clear from earlier posts exchanged with me -- don't do anything to a compact
Mac that cannot be undone, which includes all PDS & RAM cards. But, the
older and more rare, the more it deserves to be restored rather than
modified. I agree. I tend to take a little more practical approach which is,
if you are going to use it (and I mean really use it), then you're entitled
to change anything on it that would have originally been modified. i.e.
Apple realized shortly after they released the SE that soldering the PRAM
battery on the logic board was a bad idea. Anyone that had to change their
battery would have most likely had it upgraded to Apple's then current specs
and added a holder. OTOH, I do agree that if it's just for fun, or you can
volunteer as a caretaker for the Macintosh heritage and have the space and
ability to operate a Mac museum, then go out of your way to preserve one in
stock condition for every "performance" compact you build. But there is
definitely something to be said for preserving the various stages of
upgraded compacts as well. So it's all good in my mind as long as the mods
are kept within the original options available during the compact's
practical life.

Putting a MacMini in a compact Mac was never even an imagined idea during
the SE's life, so such a mod has no place on this list, whether or not you
can do it without permanently altering the compact -- and under no
circumstances should any permanent mods be done to a 128k or 512k.
