Hi all -
I rescued an SE (1mb, 2 800k floppies) from the garbage man this morning
(literally, the garbage truck was just down the street when I noticed the
sad little box sitting at the curb between some garbage bags and a very
rusty lawn spreader). Although the case was pretty dirty, it's in good
shape, and has cleaned up nicely. When I broke it open to do a
pre-power-up inspection, I found two things that concern me.
The first is a patch of corrosion on the bottom side of the logic board,
the origin of which has me guessing some. There is no sign of any leakage
on the top side of the board, but it looks like this one may have spent
some quality time in a garage or basement at one point. If you like, see:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze25xwa/P1010005.JPG (718K)
which shows a close-up of the area in question.
Now, before I power-up, I'd like to clean that area with some alcohol and
a soft brush. Now we come to part 2: this SE has the PRAM battery soldered
to the board. It still shows 3V, so I guess it should be okay to use. But!
I'm worried about "wet cleaning" the bottom of the board with the battery
still installed. Seems like a recipe for disaster. So my question: Is
there a way to disable the battery without removing it (ie: a jumper or
something)? If not, might it be better to yank the battery and figure out
a way to replace it with a battery clip so that battery changes in the
future would be a (relative) breeze? Alternative methods of cleaning up
the corrosion? Thoughts? Comments?
Thanks -
Tim
