Would it be possible to make a patch for the kernel xconfig which could read
info from pciutils, lothar, kudzu, etc and input that information into xconfig?

that could theoretically answer all the hardware questions, and leave the user
with the optional stuff.  Of course, one should be able to go back and still
customize the hardware options.   

Any thoughts?
