OK, can you try to put:
default-mru

instead of mru 1524 in your options file? This will tell PPP to ignore the mru
settings that gnome-ppp asks for. 

It seems that gnome-ppp has 296 hardcoded into the binary, and for whatever
reason, changing it in the settings doesn't work.

Then, I'll need both the /var/log/messages and the other /var/log entries so I
can debug the LCP requests.

Sorry, I wish I could do it myself, but I can't duplicate it, as for me, a mru
of 296 works just fine, it's only a problem with some ISPs.

I had to install KPPP to connect to the internet over a modem. Gnome RPM should
either work, or KPPP should be installed by default instead. The following are
