I agree, it is better to use a subdirectory, and IMHO uw should ship like that by default.
Imho uw should be ditched, shot in the head, casted in the the deepest ocean and left there forever. Would it be possible to ship dovecot (http://dovecot.procontrol.fi) instead for lusers that still need the mbox format? at least you could configure where the hell you want your mailboxes to be at runtime.
