Ideally the installer would look around for the most appropriate
directory to use.

For example: 'Hmm, I see this machine has an i686 processor.  Look for
an i686/ directory - nope.  The next best choice for this processor is
i586/ - yes, use that.'

This check could be done on a per-package basis rather than once at the
start of the install.  Then Mandrakesoft could distribute a CD with
mostly i586 packages but also i686 versions of a few selected things
like the kernel and the GIMP.

It would be nice to be able to build optimized packages for your
particular processor, place them inside the install tree, and have them
Just Work without needing to modify the installer.

Maybe the Mandrake installer already does this?
