You might want to try cdrdao (if you are prepared to use ide-scsi on your
reader). Once you set it up (by specifying all the options you want, plus
-s), you can do things like:

$ cdrdao copy

So, you can have it default to writing a temporary file (defaults to your
pwd), or do a direct copy.

Hacing said that, direct copies aren't always that reliable, cause
invariably you will get CDs that will pick up a read error ...
