I just received my e-mail back on the list and see a typo, .002 to
044 THAT
SHOULD SAY .002 to .004. Guess my finger was faster than my brain.
I use to teach in a Part 147 school, this is one question that seems
to be
on every written test they give. How much larger is the hole you put a
rivet
in, than the diameter of the rivet itself.

| Joa,
| Use a #30 drill bit. That is the size used to drill the hole, it
takes
| in
| the .002 to .044 that the hole is supposed to be larger than the
| rivet. When
| using it you go right to the edge of the meat and it should pop
right
| off.
| If you have a couple that do not, take an ice pick insert in the
hole
| and
| lightly roll it around and the rivet will pop out.

| | Well today I broke down and bought a bunch of solid rivet stuff
| including
| a
| | used pneumatic squeezer. Gonna go for it on the wing tanks,
| probably
| regret
| | it but hey, it's a learning experience!
| |
| | I started drilling out the rivets with a 1/8" drill and this seems
| just a
| | touch small. Plus it's hard to stay centered on that big flat
flush
| rivet
| | (no dimple) even though I punched a hole in the center. In any
| event what
| | I'm left with is a hole down the center of the rivet and the head
| still
| on.
| | On the few where the head popped off the top (countersunk flat
part)
| is
| | still firmly attached. Any tips??? Use a little larger bit and
| then go
| | with a larger rivet later or is there another trick to getting
these
| buggers
| | out?
| |
| | I had my father in law help with the punching and he counted like
| 248
| rivets
| | in each wing tank. Wheew, this will be a while!
| |
| | As always, thanks for the advice and let's keep em flying, ok?!
| |
