Larry,
Sell your coupe only if you really need the money! Go out and start
your engine about once a month,
taxi it around a little, get all your temps up to normal (the coupes' not
yours) and put it back to bed
for another month.
Believe me, I know this is pure torture to go through all this and not
be able to at least make a
trip around the pattern. I know because I've been doing it for about
three years now in hopes that I'll
one day be able to fly it again.
In fact, I've recovered my wings (stits), installed new slick mags and
harness, removed the seat,
floor boards, tail cone and checked everything I could think of to check
out the entire plane.
Except for the paint on the fuselage it's as good as the day it left
the factory in 1946. (I know,
it left ERCO with no paint, but it was later painted by the dealer and
that's what's faded.) Last week I
pulled it out of the hangar and over to the wash rack and gave it a good
bath. Hey! That paint isn't as
bad as all the dust made it look. Maybe the next time I get an attack of
"Airportitis" I'll even start
polishing it. (Maybe some cleaning comepound would bing the color back to
the paint.)
As I said above, this is pure 'torture', but it's also a goal and
extremely good theropy. If worse
comes to worse and I can, in fact, never fly again the price will only go
up and I'll make money by
holding on to it for a while longer. But, if I do someday get my medical
back, I'll have an excellent
coupe patiently sitting there waiting for me to take aloft at a moments
notice.
Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm not being realistic, but I've never heard
of anyone dying from a disease
called "dreaming'.
Hang in there Larry, don't do anything sudden. Think it over, think
possitive, and keep your fingers
crossed.
Oh, and by the way, you can go out to the airport TODAY and fly your
coupe and still be legal.
Wanna know how?????? Just take a legal PPL with you for a ride and call
him the PIC. As long as he
(she) is legal to fly your plane and everything is current on both him and
the coupe this is completely
legal and you can fly for another XXXXX number of years.
I just got mine back together (again) earlier this month and I have a
good friend here in the area
who would be happy to go with me any time I want to fly. This could even
include going to our local
fly-ins, etc.
Just food for thought Larry.......Good Luck in whatever you decide,
but think hard before you sell
your coupe. And even if you do decide to sell it, please don't leave our
group here on the net.....we
need your 'sarcastic attitude' to keep us on our toes!!! (Spook and I and
many others would miss you
tremendously if you left us.)

PS...If anyone out there disagrees with anything I've said above, please
let me know. As far as I know
this is all legal and correct. (Any FAA people out there? If so, please
contact me directly and let me
know if this is all correct or not. I don't want to do anything
'illegal', I just want to "Fly the
coupe". Thanks!)
