I just flew my Coupe to Phoenix, a cross country of 550 miles. It's
always had the spinner, but was removed this annual, due to cracks in the
mounting plate. I didn't notice any adverse effects of not having the
spinner in place. While in Phoenix, I made three short flights, duration
of 30 minutes each, taking the new owner and his friend up and around.
The temp was around 100 degrees. Did not overheat, even though we were
full power on climb out. It was running 190-200 degrees down there, but I
expected even hotter. The flight down, it was about 170-180 degrees.

I flew the Coupe yesterday to the hangar, with an instructor onboard, to
the hangar about 20 minutes away. The spinner bulkhead had been discovered
cracked in the annual so I had it as well as the spinner bulkhead removed.
About 10 minutes into the flight RPM went to 1900 with the engine running
very rough. We powered back as we approached a local airport and the
engine smoothed out. We landed and inspected with no visible problem. We
took off, climbed to 3000AGL over the airport and finished the hop. The
onboard instructor was also an A&P and said we might have stuck a valve on
a hot cylinder due to the missing spinner not directing air properly into
the cowl. Anyone else had this experience with a spinner off? Thanks ED
