Ed,
I went through several spinners and back plates a couple of years ago and
finally 86 them all and use a skull cap on the prop. Saw a Coupe hanging
in the museum in College Park with polished prop and skull cap. No
increase in temps whatever. Cheap and easy fix.

Subject: [COUPERS] Flying without spinner and hot engine?

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any
advice in this forum.]----
I flew the Coupe yesterday to the hangar, with an instructor onboard, to
the hangar about 20 minutes away. The spinner bulkhead had been discovered
cracked in the annual so I had it as well as the spinner bulkhead removed.
About 10 minutes into the flight RPM went to 1900 with the engine running
very rough. We powered back as we approached a local airport and the
engine smoothed out. We landed and inspected with no visible problem. We
took off, climbed to 3000AGL over the airport and finished the hop. The
onboard instructor was also an A&P and said we might have stuck a valve on
a hot cylinder due to the missing spinner not directing air properly into
the cowl. Anyone else had this experience with a spinner off? Thanks ED
