I think you're on the right track, but if the cause were ram air pressure,

why would it occur suddenly, with no warning?  Seems like it ought to
happen 
predictably.  If the carb were performing correctly, it ought to be able
to 
compensate for the increased airflow, anyhow.  My guess is that there's 
something a little off with the carb, like float level or restrictions in
one 
of the jets.  By restricting the air intake you're probably reducing
slightly 
the available power, or at least that which would be available if
everything 
were correct to start with.
