It's my feeling that the reason the engine would just quit cold, is
that the mixture is just border line and when the float level varies a
zillionth of an inch down in it's normal cycle, the combination of too
much air and a very slight drop in fuel level will suddenly cause an
engine to stop. Here's an experiment to show what too much air can do to
an engine. Take the air filter off your lawnmower, [replace the filter
bolt if it's an older Briggs and Stratton] Take an air nozzel from an
air compressor, start the engine, hold the air nozzel back a couple of
feet from the carb and give it a quick shot of air . The engine will
most times stop instantly. A main jet can only pass so much fuel as the
air intake is increased and then suddenly the mixture is wrong and
things go quiet. Remember, in the air you not only have the 100 or so
M.P.H. wind going in the intake but most likely another 100 M.P.H. from
the prop. If you look at other planes that use the same C-75--C85
engine, almost all use a square type intake like a box with a 2" pipe to
the carb. Because the "box" has a flat back, it doesn't have the much
talked about [by me] funnel action. Also they seem to have a much lower
count on mysterious engine stoppages. With the Stromberg carb the lean
mixture seems to be next to useless. It usually causes the engine to
stop dead with no in between setting. Maybe this shows how close to too
lean the carb is in the first place. If you pull the carb heat on,which
richens the mixture, the lean mix is much more gradual. Well, something
else to think about. If any one else has strange engine stoppages I
would like to hear the story about it as I am trying to collect as many
views on this as possible, in the hopes that we can find a cure for
those who have had power out problems.
