Jon: I agree that it's some sort of border line condition that is likely the cause of the problem, but I still think it is most likely an out of spec carb. I'm a great fan of the Stromberg carb and feel it is generally misunderstood. fOLKS LEARN ON A mARVEL AND THEN DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE sTROMBERG DOESN'T WORK THE SAME WAY. (OOPS) If you know what to expect from the mixture control, and when to use it (and when not) it is more than adequate. For that matter, try wiring a Marvel mixture control to full rich and fly. Guarantied it won't work as well as a Stromberg. The design of the Stromberg makes it much more self compensating than the Marvel. The mixture control should not even be used for density altitudes below 5000 ft. Part of the problem is that many have not been used much and thus do not work correctly when they are used. Combine that with the misunderstanding, and they get the reputation of not working well. Your mileage may vary.
