What's this hard to handle crap? I've never flown an aircraft that was hard to handle. They're just different. Heavy controls? Try using the trim, that's what it's for. Like getting out of a sedan? Let's get real here. Some folks like the feel of a larger vehicle. And, I don't think I'd put a 172 in the heavy weight division. A 172 is just barely a 4 place aircraft. As a matter of fact, take the rear seat out. Throw it away. It's a great little 2 placer. And, compared to a 182, it's nimble and easy to handle.
