I suspect that those who 'prefer' high wing planes have very little if any
time in a low wing. I made
my first 'legal' solo (after some dual) in an old C150 straight-tail. For
several years that's all I
flew until after I returned from SEA (South East Asia) and started renting
a Piper Warrior. I was
hooked!! No more sitting in a box with limited visability, I had
discovered omni-directional veiwing.
The only place I couldn't see was 'straight down' and who cares about
that? If you're buzzing your
friends house you'll be looking in front of you, not under you. By the
time the house disappears under
the wing you're already past it so why look down?
I didn't realize how bad the 'boxes' really are (it's been so long
since I was in one) until Dan
took me up to Albany to pick up my coupe about 3 years ago in a J-3 Cub.
I really felt like I was in a
box with tiny windows. And I've always thought that the J-3 was about the
best trainer ever built, I
guess until you discover 'low wings' it is. (That's one time when the
'backseaat driver' really is the
boss.) : - )
Okay, that's the pro, now let's hear the con.
