There shoul;d be two springs wound around the pivot hinge pin for the trim tab --on the trailing edge of the elevator. The springs role is to prevent
trim tab flutter, and therefore elevator flutter - if the trim control wire fails. (Service Memorandum 55, Nov 1948.) This Memo points out that elevator flutter can be stopped if the airplane is flown at aproximately 60 mph. The springs have a tab on each end of the wound spring, which will keep the trim tab in neutral. There is one spring at each end (third and seventh section) of the trim tab hinge pin mounting tabs. Service Bulletin 55-A, February 1949. Kit SK-14 (Spring Part # 41522035) is the kit for modifying Ercoupes prior to S/N 4869, where springs and trim tab stops were installed at the factory. Harry
