A few years ago an accident with fatalities was caused by malfunction of
the
trim tab. As an aviation safety counselor I spend lots of time at the
local
FSDO.
At the time of the accident the NTSB , which has an office here at Dupage,
asked to check my trim tab as part of their investigation. He inspected it
and
found that it was indeed legal and commented on how important the two
little
return springs were.
As a courtesy, he looked my entire plane over and prounced it airworthy,
as I
knew it was.....I'm not sure but I think the trim tab went west and caused
elevator flutter....
It would be in the FAA accident reports if anyone is interested..
