That's very interesting. I do have libgrypt-1.5.3 installed, and looking on bugs.gentoo.org (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501284) there seems to be something borked and flawed with all versions prior to 1.6. libcrypt-1.6 is hard masked, so I have not looked to unmask previously.
