Wells Branch just paid $200 for Random Acts Puppets and it
was worth every cent! Our room was filled way beyond capacity (he's been
here before and they love him) with a group from about age 2 through
grandparents. He kept the group totally engaged during each of the 5
stories to a degree that amazed me. He spent individual time before the
performance discussing the puppets and stories with a group of elementary
school aged kids. We got so many compliments for doing the program and
requests for "when are you going to do this again" that I
cannot imagine the board not funding this kind of program for summer
reading. He has even offered to customize a program for us.

I personally don't think $200 is excessive for a live performance if it's good. Having a live performance during the reading program is a highlight for us. It is money well spent. For us it is really community enrichment more than just entertainment. The interaction between the audience and the performers is something you cannot get from showing movies and that interaction fosters an inquisitiveness that is essential for any kind of learning. Live performances promote an appreciation of the arts. Everyone should have at least one chance in their lifetime to experience a live performance and what better place than your library where unlimited sources of cultural enrichment are at their fingertips. I should think that the City Manager and the Financial Director would be totally supportive of such a positive and popular endeavor and thank you for bringing it to the library for only $200. In our town the politicos like to associate themselves with our programs...it makes them look good.
Good luck with getting them to sign the check.
