You've gotten some good responses so far. Do you have a mission statement
for your library? Our statement is on our website and says:

Recognizing that the Round Rock Public Library System is a gateway
to the community, our mission is to provide the highest quality
educational, informational, recreational, and cultural resources and
services to a diverse population. We are committed to giving individuals,
families, and businesses an opportunity to expand their knowledge, encourage
personal growth, and enhance the quality of life in our dynamic and changing
community.

Providing various kinds of performers go hand in hand with our goals,
whether it's educational or "just" recreational. When the kids reach school
age, they may get some of these experiences in school, but for the preschool
set, the library is one of the few venues available for programs. In bigger
cities, there may be children's theater, puppet shows or other types of
programs available, but it's generally hard to find in smaller cities.

Our Friends group for years was the main source of funds for our programs,
but we are now budgeting for these programs, also. I think the programs we
offer are a valuable service to the community.

I need to run something by everyone. My City Manager and Financial Director
think that spending $200 for a outside performer to come for storytime
during the Summer Reading program is accessive. I need some suggestions for
what to say to change their minds. Please suggest away.
