Kim, I think I would sell it as an enrichment experience. An outside performer can bring ideas and experiences to the audience that you can not. These people do this for a living, or at least as a big hobby. They have worked at honing their craft specificly for the enrichment of children. You could also sell this as an additional service to the community. I do not know about your community, but in our community there are many people who are not able to attend high quality performances unless they are provided by the library. We are building community support as well as enriching minds. In addition, I agree with the other posting that it brings in new people to the library. Events create positive, memorable library experiences. Memorable experiences go a long way with parents as well as children. Here is one more thought. If the performer is $200.00 and you have 100 people, you have a positive, memorable, enriching library experience for $2.00 a person. That is a great deal and a terrific service to the community. I hope this helps! Good Luck! My City Manager and Financial Director think that spending $200 for a outside performer to come for storytime during the Summer Reading program is accessive. I need some suggestions for what to say to change their minds. Please suggest away.
