A long, long time ago, I discovered Irish coffee (which is of course an
*American* invention, like the Saint Patrick's Day parade)...and in short
order became an alcoholic. Actually, I think I must've been an alcoholic for
years; I used to go on a bender once a year, then stay dry the rest of the
year. After I found the most glorious taste in all of God's green universe,
the benders got closer and closer together, until one morning I woke up with
absolutely no memory of the last twelve hours and, even worse, no idea where
I had left my glasses... That was fifteen years ago, and I haven't had a
drop since, if you don't count the brandy cherry I ate by accident at an
office party in 1990. Now, at the time I discovered Irish coffee, I was
still, alas, a registered Republican. Shortly thereafter I looked at my
voter registration card, gagged, and promptly re-registered as a Democrat.
After looking at the current crop of candidates from all parties, both major
and minor, I am about to abandon the political spectrum and re-register as a
Non-Euclidean.
As the doctor told me when I asked him if I was crazy, "One of us is, my
boy, one of us is..."
