Galileo was not imprisoned because he stated the Earth revolved around the
sun but because he originally agreed to place then, just before printing,
removed a preface that asserted the Vatican's contrary, Ptolemaic
position. Galileo and Pope Urban VIII were both conceited, arrogant
megalomaniacs who clashed over it and, not surprisingly given Urban's
stronger position, Galileo lost big. Only in hindsight does the pompous
Galileo appear the martyr.
