And since crucifixion was the reserved punishment for high crimes and
misdemeanors against the Roman state, Roman authorities would not
release anyone just because the residents of Jerusalem asked them to
(the Barrabbas myth).

And Rome was constantly dealing with the "Judea problem" of any number
of men claiming to be the true Messiah who would lead the Judeans to
freedom...rarely were those other messianic claimants crucified, and if
they were it was due to definite treasonable activities against the
power of Rome, not because of the claim to be 'the Messiah'.

Rome was actually very tolerant of the various religions under its
scope of rule...problems only arose with the Jews -- and later the
Christians -- when periodically Rome would require residents in its
various colonies to make sacrifices to the various Roman gods. Pagans
in other lands easily complied, and Rome could never understand why the
Jews put up such a fuss...

So Rome viewed the periodic appearances of messiahs in Judea to be a
local problem, to be handled by the Judean authorities. If the temple
authorities wished to make an example of a heretic, Rome would gladly
allow them to whip the man, torture him, put his eyes out, even kill
him via stoning, if at least the semblance of a trial was held
beforehand.

For Jesus to have been condemned to crucifixion, he had to have done
something that really shook Rome up...they had to have considered him a
danger and a threat to the order and the power of the Roman state, else
they would have let the Sanhedrin handle the matter.

Not only is crucifixion a slow and grisly form of death, the Romans
made sure it was very public...the crosses were always placed where the
condemned could clearly be seen by those passing by on the most
well-traveled roads...it was Rome's way of saying "See...here is what
we do to those who try to oppose us!" It definitely was used in a
manner to terrorize those who lived there and passed by...one could not
avoid seeing the condemned, and hearing those who had not yet died...
