Actually Adrian the PO's question is one that is often asked (that is if 
memory of past questions serves me).  I like the way you answered the 
question.  You might consider posting on the wiki under a linux section.  I 
don't recall what is required for Mac's.  I do recall using dabo.pth but don't 
recall where I put the file.  To my knowledge windows hasn't changed - still 
uses site-packages.
