I see one problem, that is the amount of different focussystem we have on every camera.
On my Canon 7D they use 19 focus points and on Pentax K-5 they use up to 11 points. On Sony A55/A77 they use focus peaking, so I believe this would be a pretty big job to implement in Darktable. Then on more advanced system you can switch between different focus systems, and the Live view focus system is a completely different story... Rawtherapee have solved this by using some kind of green focus mask which works really well.
