Am I missing something? Apart from the miniscule use case of producing images for a focusing technique tutorial why would anyone want this? OK you may select an AF point to assist the camera in achieving desired focus but after you have taken the image I would have though the only thing of interest is what focus was actually achieved rather than what the camera settings were.

On my Canon 7D they use 19 focus points and on Pentax K-5 they use up to 11 points. On Sony A55/A77 they use focus peaking, so I believe this would be a pretty big job to implement in Darktable. Then on more advanced system you can switch between different focus systems, and the Live view focus system is a completely different story... Rawtherapee have solved this by using some kind of green focus mask which works really well.
