The "orientation" is intended to rotate the picture according to the
orientation of the camera at shot time.
Most of the cameras has a sensor which indicates the camera has been tilted
90° (to shoot in portrait mode instead of lanscape mode). And darktable,
via the orientation module rotates the pictures 90 or 270° according to the
way you get the picture.

The orientation is intended to correct an horizon that is not straight (for
instance).
