Monitors point away from the audience and toward the musicians on stage.

Microphones on stage would be a great way to record the wall of sound, for sure, but would not necessarily a good way to record a stage with monitors on the floor.

There are some wonderful recordings made at the Keystone Berkeley by Bob Menke, who put one microphone in the floor monitor and pointed one at the stage.
