From: Warren Postma <[EMAIL PROTECTED]<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> Subject: My Delphi 2009 conversion status so far: Thumbs Up! Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2008 13:45:49 -0800 Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> Lines: 104 I have several large (50+ forms, 200+logic classes/units) applications, and several dozen sets of components, most of which are now working in Delphi 2009. I have major large applications running in Delphi 2009 now. I have done the conversions so that the code still builds in both Delphi 7, 2007, and 2009. Ifdefs are minimal, because of how I have restructured/retyped/aliased things. I wanted my code to build cleanly in all versions of Delphi. The move was not one way. I'm keeping my options open. Today I got so many apps working, that think I have finally crested the worst part of the conversion effort, and now it will just be finding the odd hidden bug or two. So far, Delphi 2009 continues to live up to its early promise. It is the most stable version of Delphi that I have ever used. I had issues with Delphi 7 crashing at shutdown. Delphi 2007 had "xyz.cpp" assertion failures (something in the editor code) that would periodically happen to me at random times, where I would suddenly lose all my work. It appeared to be related to the code-completion/error-insight features. Delphi 2009 just works. It's faster than working Delphi 2007. I like it. I plan to switch all my development work to Delphi 2009. We will continue to build existing products and ship final builds using Delphi 2007 for the time being, but as an Editor, IDE, and development environment, I find I prefer Delphi 2009 to working in any other version. It took a lot of doing to get me "mentally upgraded" from the Delphi 7 IDE to the later editions. Delphi 2007 was the first one that I could actually use well enough to stop using Delphi 7 for everyday work. Now, Delphi 2009 finally raises the bar even higher. It's the best delphi ever. The help is useable. Better than Delphi 7. I still think they could do lots more to make the product improve, but really, the product is clean, slick, and well designed. I love the debug/release build icons added to the project manager treeview, I love the new configuration options manager. I like the fact that source code paths in the Library Path are made relative automatically. There are just so many nice little touches. No I don't work for Embarcadero/Codegear. No, Delphi 2009 is not perfect. I'm sure I'll run into a bug or two. It's just the best version of Delphi ever. :-) Now that I've said that, watch out.... Some big bug is going to rise up and eat half a day of my work. I should know better than to tempt fate like this. But here goes.
