AFAIK, there are some applications are willing to use SQLite, such as
SMF, Firefox3, Thunderbird, Tracker[1], OpenSync[2], and etc.

Ideally, have one shared copy is best solution. But who will maintain
it, how it can be maintained is still under discussion.
