Hi James,
     I sent an email to Milan, Andreas, & Shawn yesterday, but fyi for
others who are interested in updating Pidgin, the latest version 2.5.5
compiles fine on OS2008.11. I never have a problem getting "spam"
garbage on ICQ. I always get it on MSN. Here's the configure options I
used to compile the latest version which is pretty much the same as the
stock version that comes w/ OS2008.11:

Arguments to ./configure:   '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man'
'--sysconfdir=/etc' '--disable-binreloc' '--enable-gnutls=no'
'--with-nss-includes=/usr/include/firefox/nss'
'--with-nss-libs=/usr/lib/firefox'
'--with-nspr-includes=/usr/include/firefox/nspr'
'--with-nspr-libs=/usr/lib/firefox' '--enable-gnome-keyring'
'--enable-gevolution' '--enable-cap' '--disable-gtkspell'
'--disable-meanwhile' '--disable-nm' '--with-perl-lib=vendor'
'CC=/opt/SunStudioExpress/bin/cc' 'CXX=/opt/SunStudioExpress/bin/CC'

BTW, there are a couple of plugins you compile to get rid of some of the
IM spam for Pidgin. Check out the plugins page on the web site. I've
compiled bot-sentry & pidgin-privacy-please.  The twitter plugin,
mbpurple works great also. Hope that helps. Take care.
