Hi, murray.

cdda2wav -e  will copy audio data to audio device,
means it will playback the audio CD
it will not create any data.
instead, you can  run cdda2wav directly, it will create audio.au.

btw: to check audio device info,
you can run cdda2wav -scanbus or cdrecord -minfo
