This isn't a terrible idea, but IMO its only significance would be to 
find out how people on this list like to customize their desktops. 
While I think it's great that Calum is asking for input, I don't expect 
the desktop team to take the majority opinion on anything.  I'd feel 
more comfortable as a user if I knew that there are usability experts 
making usability decisions based on usability data rather than a 
democratic vote.  Users are often taught new ways to interact with their 
software based on how its been presented by experts who put it together, 
and don't necessarily know all of these things themselves ahead of time.
