Quite true. I agree that linux is more than likley the ideal web platform,
however as a child of the Bill Gates era, i didn't really have this as an
option. Thrown from nice simple NT networking job into the world of the
internet was enough of a challenge, without the added torture of learning a
new operating system.

However there must be SOMEONE out there who has tried/succeeded at getting
this running on a Windows based server?

Well, let's not start a Linux/Windows flame war here :-) Using open source
vs. M$ is sort of a religious question ;-)

OTOH Linux is better :-)) At least it is more stable, scalable, flexible and
cheaper. We are running configurations Windows will never be able to beat.
(E.g. MySQL based email-configuration and XML controlled DNS, both with a
web interface.)
