Laszlo may want to comment on that, but I touched on same point in my last email. I'm not sure the concern about unshared commits holds. But there are certainly things in build infrastructure where release* branches are special cased that we might want to consider. Having a transient release branch, at least for 12.2, seems safer to me given limited time. Review afterwards?
