Could it be a solution to continue Java 8 on a branch and then, if that works, i.e., if the work that needs to be done is actually done there, we bring it back into the main repo -- i.e., we put it on a sidetrack for one release, to see if this lightens the burden for those who have felt frustrated and so that those who rightly are focused on backward compatibility have a place to prove that the approach they propose works?
