I disagree here. Actually the right order is 2,3,4: 3 certainly comes after two, as copying parts of a module is superior to copying the whole module. 4 is after three, as the _goal_ is to make binfilter independent.

But IMHO it's clear that option 1 is by far the best and should be aimed
for as often as possible and that option 5 should be considered only in
desperate cases.
Certainly. Copying just some pieces is IMHO OK as well. Especially as these pieces are the things which are going to be changed in the non binfilter code, otherwise there wouldn't be any need to copy.
