Setting the tcp and child timouts to 10 seems to have solved the problem 
(thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for pointing this out), and that seems to have 
solved 
the problem.

Since spamd is a critical process generally left running on a perpetual basis, 
would it make sense to create a guard process whose job it is to monitor the 
spamd process functioning, and restart it if there is a problem?  Apache and 
MySql for example use this technique (though I am not certain they check 
for "unresponsive" processes - they may only look for "down" processes)
