Hi all,
I've prepared a new proposal for the replacement of http://download.openoffice.org/index.html with http://download.openoffice.org/draft.html

As you can see two major things changed:
- a fifth button in orange was added. This is a link to give users a chance to evaluate our newest RCs/Snapshot builds

- after clicking on the green download button the contribute page will be shown and then the download starts.

Beside this,

- all blocks act like a button, was remarked by Maarten, done
- the 'Get more platforms and languages' is a new light-green block, was remarked by Maarten, done

Hope everything is fine for our customers and we can start the replacement on Monday.

Cheers,
Frank

Hello again,
a first view on the proposal is available at http://download.openoffice.org/draft.html

As you can see it's more or less a copy of the 2.3.1 download-page (http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/index.html?focus=download).
And your draft.html is intended as a replacement for the download.ooo/2.3.1/index.html page?

I just talked to Frank and he explained to me that the new page is intended as a replacement for the Download Central (download.ooo/index.html) page.

If it is intended as Download Central (download.ooo/index.html) we have to give it a bit more thought.

I am at least not sure whether people were aware that the download.ooo/index.html is Frank's target when they gave their comments or whether they thought that the download.ooo/2.3.1/index.html page was meant to be modified.

I'm not against replacing the <version>/index.html page and we should certainly measure the change in downloads when replaying it. I would like to use a piece of HTML/JS (plus .css and .js) for the home page and download central to implement 1-click download (exactly *one* :-) as soon as possible - as you mention below. If you give us such a piece of code I would be happy to use it now at Download Cenbral.

I'll ask Frank to extract this part of the draft.html page. Perhaps he can create a draft2.html which only replaces the download-button on the current download.ooo/index.html page, for a better review.

The new workflow has no pass-through page with information about contributing or graphical advertisement for testing or donations. If we drop this in favor of less clicks we should at least have a follow-up page that is shown after the start of the 1-click download. See the download process of the DE project or for extensions for an examples of follow-up pages.

That part is already implemented. In fact I think we could as well use the draft.html directly as a replacement for the download.ooo/index.html page now, as I think the design is more appealing than the current page. The parts missing on the draft.html, which currently are on the download.ooo/index.html page, are a link for "Derived Works", source code for old versions, L10N in progress, OOo solutions, the section on download managers and part of the second "Development" heading.

How do others think about replacing the download.ooo/index.html with Frank's draft.html? Is it better to first replace only the download-button with a 1-Click-Download button and then think about design changes, or would you prefer to have the download.ooo/index.html replaced now with the draft.html (perhaps with some/all of the missing links added to the sidebar)?

Greetings
Stefan

Regards,

Jörg
