You need to ensure that you have the correct version of the wireless-tools package. You need wireless-tools-21-0 for kernel 2.2.19, and that's the one on the SME Server V5 CD. It is not installed by default, but there for people to play with. I found that moving to the later kernel moved my Wavelan card from wvlan0 to eth2 without any change of configuration. I haven't had time to figure out why....
