Charlie:

You are being too glib here. If you purchase RH 7.0 in a box, or
download it, you get kernel 2.2.16, *NOT* 2.2.19. You only get that if you
buy RH, then know enough (or care to take the risk) to upgrade the kernel to
something not part of the original design.

Secondly, while you may disagree, Adaptec does make fine adapters, and
their SCSI raid adapters come from DPT, a very well-respected vendor, and
certainly one of the best. So, not using the best hardware in an
installation isn't a very appealing option. Yes, there are others who make
SCSI raid, but either they are less likely to exist next year, or they are
more costly.

Finally, complaining to Adaptec is not likely to do much good. Somewhere
in the 2.4 series, I believe their raid drivers got incorporated into the
kernel, so they are only providing what they do as an accomodation to those
running 2.2 legacy systems. Now, I happen to think that 2.2 is very stable,
maybe more so than 2.4, so I'm not complaining that Mitel is still using it.
But since Mitel moved to 2.2.19, they did (IMHO) move a bit out of the
hardware-driver mainstream. Hence the continuing need for 4.1.2.

Finally, I don't see why a hardware company that wants to keep its
hardware and methods proprietary, should be criticized for not providing
driver source code. Nor should they have to provide binary copies of each
driver for each distro for each possible kernel update that might be applied
to each distro.

Now, I don't think I told you anything you didn't already know, but I
did make myself feel better ;-). And, I hope you are not offended.

Regards,

Tom
