This is the principal obstacle, I guess. I come from a computing sciences
background, have plenty of friends and acquaintances doing computers but
know of nobody using freenet.

I had to use the IRC way until I got over 20 links. In a week those where
trimmed to eight reliable, almost 24/7 connections. As time goes by, I'm
now with 4-5 links that are consistently up and updated.

So I'll need soon again to get out to find new references from total
strangers. I have not the personal gift to easily make strong confidence
bonds with people over the internet, so if even I know the regulars in
Frost and here, they don't know about me. I could ask them their refs, but
neither them nor I have any guarantee that, in the end, either of us are
not A Bad Guy.

In short, I'm with Ian in this one: people has to get unreliable references
somehow. Better if this is automated in favor of network quality and user
friendliness; the hard way is always there for those willing to go the
extra steps in exchange for more security. And if everything goes as
planned, there will be a time when this won't be any longer necessary. I
know of dozens of people using emule, including some very close family and
friends. Once freenet reaches the penetration of, say emule or gnutella, it
will be easier for everyone to migrate to pure darknet. I'd say it will be
just a breeze.

Freenet as is now faces multiple challenges, and the entry barrier is not
one of the smaller ones...
