There is an easier way for non technical people to access the whois.

Go to www.samspade.org
Look for Sam Spade for Windows
Its a network tools console that does whois lookups, traceroute an other
useful things.

The list of whois servers is a bit out of date but you can add others by
tweaking the windows registry settings for it, or just default to
whois.geektools.com

Personally I couldn't live without it.

I can't see any limit on the number of whois queries I can do via this tool
or shell access.
There is clearly no limit on access to whois.crsnic.net and this provides a
lot of the info required during a transfer.
