replacement for Active Directory (although I have no experience)
Correct. Almost is the key word. Depending on what you need, Samba 4 may
or may not fit the bill. I am currently running one Samba 4 Active
Directory DC.

Can Samba 4 work as an Active Directory replacement for Exchange? Can
Samba 4 work as an Active Directory replacement on Illumos?
Depends on the version of Exchange.

But frankly speaking, if you are going install Exchange, you are going
to install some edition of Windows Server which comes with Active
Directory...
Yes, I have one in a multi DC environment with one Samba 4 instance
acting as one of the DC.
