I will second the active directory advice, if you are running Exchange you may as well use MS active directory and save yourself some pain.
I have about 100 users, although we peaked at 150, trying to get you head around exchange and PowerShell will be enough without the problem of not knowing if samba is at fault. Active directory does just work, and I find the inbuilt cifs server of Illumos easier than samba.
