I will second the active directory advice, if you are running Exchange you may
as well use MS active directory and save yourself some pain.

I have about 100 users, although we peaked at 150, trying to get you head
around exchange and PowerShell will be enough without the problem of not
knowing if samba is at fault. Active directory does just work, and I find the
inbuilt cifs server of Illumos easier than samba.

Subject: Re: [discuss] Illumos as an Active Directory replacement

thanks for that link, looks like I'm gonna have to tell them that 160+ people
need active directory _and_ exchange ...

I knew it was bad news in any case, but I'd have spent a long time looking for
that data, which would have been wasted effort.

Cheers again.

Hi,

A board meeting was taken last week, where no one with any IT experience was
sitting, in which it was "decided" that we would be moving our email to
Microsoft exchange ... we were bought out beginning of last year and they don't
understand our existing system.

The IT Director is currently trying to work out why or how this was decided
with no technical merit, but I need to look into the options as quick as I can
so that I can work out a possible solution.

I hate the idea of taking our nice Dovecot/procmail system and replacing it
with an Exchange server, but if it is deemed from "above" that this is how we
have to proceed we will have to install one. We have a system of "internal"
mail servers and "external" mail servers, so we would look into keeping all the
existing "external" stuff, and just swapping in for the internal servers.

To run Exchange I am aware that I need an Active Directory. I currently run an
OpenLDAP NS, talking via Samba 3 to our windows systems. I am aware that Samba
4 is supposed to be an almost drop in replacement for Active Directory
(although I have no experience)
Correct. Almost is the key word. Depending on what you need, Samba 4 may or may
not fit the bill. I am currently running one Samba 4 Active Directory DC.

the question(s) (after my long ramble):

Can Samba 4 work as an Active Directory replacement for Exchange? Can Samba 4
work as an Active Directory replacement on Illumos?
Depends on the version of Exchange.

But frankly speaking, if you are going install Exchange, you are going to
install some edition of Windows Server which comes with Active Directory...

Yes, I have one in a multi DC environment with one Samba 4 instance acting as
one of the DC.
